Still thinking about my evening date with Monet @courtauld last week. You think you know his work, that you've seen his views of the Thames countless times before, but somehow this exhibition managed to surprise me and really make me think about him as an artist in a whole new way. Such an impressive show that reaffirms my love of a 1-2 room exhibition. And of galleries that supply plenty of catalogues to encourage people to sit down and delve deeper whilst surrounded by the works ✨

I was lucky enough to be asked to interview @kerryharding_art and @lucasreinerstudio for this stunner of a show on @candida_stevens that opened today ✨

"...The fragmentary and abstracted nature of Reiner’s work is complemented by the timeless and otherworldly feel of Harding’s landscapes. These are paintings not defined by the physical elements they represent but by the interaction between and sense of magnitude embedded in the shapes and layers used to form them."

“On the shelf of Charlotte Evans’s studio, some 3,500 thousand miles away from London in Toronto, Canada, is a catalogue of paintings from the National Gallery’s collection. In this book are countless images that connect the artist with her childhood - a childhood that was split between London and rural Tuscany. In Evans’s latest exhibition with Candida Stevens Gallery, ‘Kiss the joy that flies’, it is the deep-rooted and yet almost entirely subconscious influence of this upbringing that permeates her paintings. . . . .

In Bird Boy, (seen here) a solitary figure wrapped in a colourful, feathered cape stands at the edge of the water beneath the cool glow of a rising sun. Arms spread in preparation for flight, he looks towards the audience in a way that seems both defiant and afraid. Perhaps influenced by Evans’s own experience of being a parent, it is as if the audience is being asked to play the role of Icarus’s father, Daedalus, who warned his son of the dangers of flying too close to the sun but was ultimately powerless to stop him from making his own mistakes.”

Alice Neel said she painted "to try to reveal the struggle, tragedy and joy of life". In the @barbicancentre exhibition you sense she meant this not just in reference to her sitters but also the struggles and joys of her own life. Despite painting just one self-portrait at the age of 80 you get such a sense of the life she lived through her depiction of others. She captured her subjects with an honesty that, whilst sometimes startling, still showed a beautiful sensitivity. Her earlier works of ordinary people from her community are particularly telling. Go see if you get a chance! ✨
